Equitation is a competitive horseback riding discipline that judges the rider's position, form, and effectiveness rather than the horse's performance. At Sorella Farm, our equitation training program develops riders who demonstrate technical skill, horsemanship, and control in the show ring. It is one of the three main English riding disciplines alongside hunters and jumpers.
Sorella Farm is located at Rancho Sierra Vista Equestrian Center, 31441 Avenida De La Vista, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. The facility is in south Orange County, California, and features multiple jumping arenas, a dressage arena, turnouts, wash racks, and a conditioning track.
Sorella Farm offers 6-day and 3-day training programs for intermediate to advanced riders in equitation, hunters, and jumpers. The 6-day program is a comprehensive, immersive experience for riders preparing for competition season. The 3-day program provides flexibility for riders balancing training with other commitments. We also offer layup care and horse sales.
Ireland Swenson is the founder and head trainer at Sorella Farm. She is a lifelong equestrian with extensive competitive success in equitation, hunters, and jumpers. Ireland leads all training programs with a horse-forward approach, emphasizing both rider development and horse welfare at the San Juan Capistrano facility.
Equitation judges the rider's position, technique, and horsemanship. Hunter classes judge the horse's way of going, manners, and movement quality. Jumper classes are judged on speed and clear rounds over fences. Sorella Farm offers training across all three disciplines, with equitation as a core specialty.
Sorella Farm competes in hunter, jumper, and equitation shows throughout Southern California and nationally. Our riders participate in USEF-rated competitions at various levels. Contact us for our current show schedule and competition calendar.

The horse-forward approach means we prioritize the horse's well-being, confidence, and training as the foundation for rider development. A well-trained, confident horse gives riders the stability needed to focus on their own position and skills. This philosophy is central to all equitation training at Sorella Farm.
